5 ways to turn patch time into a game

Getting a child to wear an eye patch for the recommended hours each day is easier when it feels like play instead of a chore. Here are five ideas families tell us work well.

1. Let them pick the design. Choosing their own patch from a stack of fun prints gives kids a sense of control over something that can otherwise feel imposed on them.

2. Patch-time-only activities. Save one favorite toy, show, or game exclusively for patch time. Kids start looking forward to the patch going on because it means the special activity begins.

3. A wear-time sticker chart. Mark off each successful patch session on a calendar or chart. Watching progress build up is motivating on its own, and a small reward at the end of the week adds extra incentive.

4. Patch buddy stories. Give the patch a name or a backstory — a superhero mask, a pirate patch, a secret mission. Reframing it as imaginative play instead of medical equipment goes a long way with younger kids.

5. Patch alongside them. Some parents wear a play patch or sunglasses during patch time so their child doesn't feel singled out. It can turn a solo task into a shared one.

Every child is different, so it's worth trying a few approaches to see what clicks. The goal is simply to make consistent wear time feel less like a battle and more like part of the day.
